In the best piece of legislation to come out of the Senate in generations, Rand Paul's proposal would cut $500 billion in annual federal spending. This is a good start and, unfortunately, it has exactly no chance of passing. LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In his first major legislative proposal, U.S. Sen.
Rand Paul has proposed cutting government spending by $500 billion in a
year, including eliminating the Departments of Energy and Housing and
Urban Development and most of the Department of Educatio... Continue reading ...

I was blown away by this story...any pictures you take with a smart phone are embedded with tracking location software and if you post them online, anyone can see where the picture was taken, if they know where to look. Talk about an invasion of privacy.

Seriously. This isn't a joke.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich has filed a lawsuit against a House of
Representatives cafeteria over dental injuries he says he sustained
three years ago when he ate a sandwich containing olives that were not
pitted.

“I’m thrilled and proud to attend Hamburger University,”
said Zhou, who in 2007 started as a management trainee in the
central Chinese city of Changsha, a job for which she and seven
others were among 1,000 applicants. That’s a selection rate of
less than 1 percent, lower than Harvard University's record low acceptance rate last year of about 7 percent, according to the
school’s official newspaper.

Simon Black has a great piece out today on how governments use tragedies to expand their power and reduce individual liberties:
US General George S. Patton is often
credited with saying "No poor bastard ever won a war by dying for his
country." Perhaps Patton was correct. But a lot of poor bastards had a
significant impact on security policies by blowing themselves up for
their cause.
Yesterday's
suicide attack at Domodedovo airport in Moscow was another stark
reminder that there are peo... Continue reading ...
"In an evening vote, the city chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police
rejected a deal that would have reinstated officers in exchange for
giving them unpaid furlough days. F.O.P. Local 1 President John Williamson said the vote was 300-1 against the measure."
Like many cities across the country, Camden, New Jersey has a massive budget deficit. To plug the hole, Camden has resorted to severe layoffs of their police, fire fighters and civil employees. The police force lost 168 of their 368 ... Continue reading ...

Congrats to the Steelers and huge props to Bruce Arians for the gutsy pass call on 3rd down at the end of the game, to seal the victory! This should be a great Super Bowl v the Packers.

Tech Ticker has an interesting segment today...they reported on a study that shows 45% of college students learn little to nothing after two years and 36% learned almost nothing after four years. I was definitely in the learned almost nothing camp. True story, a few years ago I looked at my college transcripts and it said I took a course in Roman History my freshman year and earned a B. I have zero recollection of the class.
This whole thing got me thinking, if you just invested the four ... Continue reading ...

It was just a matter of time...according to a Zillow study average US home values have dropped 26% since June 2006. That's slightly more than the 25.9% decline from 1928 to 1933. Unfortunately, the housing market continues to face strong headwinds: mortgage ARM resets won't peak until 2012, interest rates are on the rise and there is a massive supply of homes available for sale. I expect home prices to continue to fall for at least two more years.

It's Pop Quiz time...lets say you are invested in a hot market that doubled in 2010. In the first few weeks of 2011, this "hot" market sells off rapidly losing 25% of it's value in a couple weeks. Do you:
A) Sell and chalk it up to a learning experience-next time you'll take profits along the way or won't invest in a market that has gone up so rapidly.
B) Buy more at the lower prices and pat yourself on the back for having the courage to buy when others are panicking.

In the case of an extremely busy intersection in Britain the answer is yes. This forward thinking town ran a test by removing traffic lights and the traffic congestion simply went away. You have to see it to believe it.

NJ Governor Chris Christie leads a new Zogby poll for the 2012 GOP nomination with support from 27% of the voters. Mitt Romney (17%), Sarah Palin (16%) and Mike Huckabee (14%) were close behind. Governor Christie has repeatedly said he has no interest in running in the 2012 election. However, he did make stops in Iowa this fall, ostensibly to support Iowa Governor Terry Branstad's election campaign. Lets be real though, no east-coast politician goes to Iowa unless he's at least considerin... Continue reading ...

Not in the U.S. of course, that would make too much sense after the 2008 financial meltdown. Rather, the European Commission has unveiled a sweeping plan to ensure private European banks never again put European citizens in a position where they're forced to bail-out the banks.
According to Michael Barneir a European Commissioner, "Banks will fail in the future and must be able to do so without bringing
down the whole financial system." Exactly. What I don't understand is why this is s... Continue reading ...

Permanent Portfolio
The numbers are in and the Permanent Portfolio was a big winner in 2010, returning 13.8% on the year. That's not much of a surprise, the Permanent Portfolio has had a positive return in 34 of the last 37 years!
If you're unfamiliar with the Permanent Portfolio it's an investment strategy created by the late Harry Browne in the 1990s. The portfolio is simple, it holds gold, bonds, cash and stocks in equal amounts. Why does something this simple work so well? Two reasons: 1)No matter the ... Continue reading ...
